Bangladesh Plane Crash: Air Force Jet Crashes Into School in Dhaka, 16 Dead, Dozens Injured

Dhaka, July 21
A routine morning turned into a national tragedy in Bangladesh’s capital city when a Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) fighter jet crashed into a school building in central Dhaka on Monday, killing at least 16 people and injuring over 40 others. Among the dead are the two pilots, students, and school staff members. Several of the injured remain in critical condition.

The Crash Incident

The crash occurred around 10:30 AM local time, when the jet — reportedly on a routine training mission — lost control mid-air and plummeted directly into the school compound. Eyewitnesses said the aircraft was flying unusually low before it spiraled downward and exploded on impact.

“There was a loud blast, and suddenly smoke and fire engulfed the area. Children were screaming and running everywhere,” said Mohammad Rafiq, a local shopkeeper who witnessed the crash.

School in Session During Impact

Classes were in full session when the aircraft hit the building. Many students and staff were caught completely off guard. Emergency services rushed to the scene, while civilians and volunteers helped pull injured victims from the debris before the fire spread.

Firefighters and military rescue teams worked for hours to bring the flames under control and search for survivors amid the wreckage. The area has since been sealed off as a high-security zone.

Casualties and Hospitalization

Officials confirmed that both pilots died on the spot. The remaining casualties include students, teachers, and school workers. Over 40 injured individuals were transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and the Combined Military Hospital (CMH). Many of them are said to be in critical condition, prompting a nationwide appeal for blood donations.

PM Responds, National Day of Mourning Declared

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families. The government has declared Tuesday a National Day of Mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast across all institutions. Special prayers will also be held across the country.

Investigation Ordered

The Ministry of Defense has launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the crash. While initial reports point to technical malfunction, authorities have not ruled out other possibilities. A team of aviation experts has been tasked with submitting a preliminary report within the coming days.

Flight Safety Under Scrutiny

The incident has triggered serious concerns over the safety of military flight operations over populated areas. Citizens and civil rights groups are now calling for stricter flight regulations, especially near schools, residential areas, and marketplaces.

On social media, hashtags like #DhakaCrash and #AirSafetyNow trended throughout the day, with thousands expressing grief, frustration, and demands for accountability.
